OperaCapture
OperaCapture is an extension to the Retriever Download Manager that allows Retriever to capture downloads directly from the Opera web browser. See the list of updates for changes from the previous version.
After installation you must run OperaCapture to enable Opera integration. OperaCapture requires two pieces of information:
- Opera's installation path.
- The location of your Opera profile directory.
OperaCapture will automatically try to determine this information but if you have a customised installation you may need to provide it manually.
Integration is accomplished in two ways
- A "Download with Retriever" item in right click context menus.
- A "Download with Retriever" button in Opera's download dialog. Selecting the "remember choice" option has no effect when using Retriever.
I have tested OperaCapture using Opera 9 on Windows XP and Debian Linux. It should work on other platforms as well but may not work with older versions of Opera (version 8 or lower).
Some issues that may occur when using OperaCapture are,
- In order to capture the download url the transfer is temporarily added to Opera's transfer window and then deleted. You may see the transfer window flash onscreen when a download is intercepted.
- It is advisable to keep Opera's transfer manager empty to avoid conflicts.
- The clipboard is used for transferring data, so any previous clipboard contents will be lost when a download is intercepted.
- When the system is under heavy processor load, the download interception may fail.
- Java and Javascript have to be enabled within Opera.
- If clicking the "Download with Retriever" button closes the window (usually when trying to download image, audio or video files), you will have to change the action Opera associates with that type of file. To do this go to Opera's "Tools" menu and select "Preferences->Advanced->Downloads", unselect "Hide file types opened with Opera" and enter the file's extenson in the "Quick Find" box. Once the appropriate mimetype is displayed select it, click "Edit" and change the action to "Show Download Dialog".
